PlugPlayer App Reviews

34 Customer Reviews:

I can now play iPhone 4 videos and see pictures from my MediaTomb. Great! However, I wish it was a better experience when moving between each media file in full screen. Full screen transition where it doesnt jump out to the app is seriously needed. Some of the viewer controls do not work within the app and outside. iPhoto is a good example, but not completely expected. I appreciate the update. Thank you.

Im developing applications that contains media servers, so I wanted to have players that can play media from UPnP A/V devices. I bought this player for my iPhone and for the Mac This application keeps hanging both on the Mac and on the iPhone. If I select a media server, it waits for ever until it shows its content (if at all). The iPhone app simply crash. For the Mac, just use VLC... Its pure waist of money.

This didnt work at all for me. Your results may vary. UPNP and DLNA in general rely on cooperation between several pieces of software and hardware. I took a chance with my setup, which includes the Logitech Media Server and several Logitech players. I was hoping for an itunes like interface which would be superior to the built in interface in Logitech Media Server, so I took a chance. No luck. Players were recognized, but nothing would play. Moreover, the interface of this program is laughably primitive and searches nearly always fail, leading the player to hang up completely. The player is obviously so primitive that it is not worth my time to pursue support from the developer. I dont want to waste my time as well as my money. BOTTOM LINE: SOMETHING LIKE THIS SHOULD HAVE A TRIAL VERSION WITH LIMITED TIME USE. I can afford to waste 5 bucks, so I gave it a try, and sure enough I wasted 5 bucks. If you are more careful with your money than I am, ask the developer for a trial version.

I have Serviio as the media server on a windows box. Had GoodPlayer on iPad which plays pretty much everything that Serviio has. Wanted to see movies on a bigger screen on the MBA, 4.99 after, with PlugPlayer, well, some videos are playing, but some are just not. The video quality seems degraded a lot. The interface is not easy to use at all. Whatever you added to playlist you cant delete just one but rather you have to "clear the list". however the list comes back even after you "cleared" it. You cant scroll forward for a movie? Even for a mov file? Apple, I want my money back.

I installed PlugPlayer hoping that it would allow me to stream audio from my UPNP/DLNA servers… but it seems like even the act of staying open for more than 10 minutes is too much to ask, as Ive never managed to get PlugPlayer to stay open for this long, even while its doing nothing. The icing on the cake is that the support page throws up a malware alert from Google, so I presume the author isnt capable of keeping their forums from being compromised, either. Disappointing. Id say "I want my money back", but thats not enough. No, I want to be reimbursed for the time that I spent trying to get it to not crash.

The application needs a patch to optimize file operations. Creating the media library and accessing the library is painfully slow. Stay away until patched (version 4.1)

Great idea, unfortunately doesn

Rendering the movies from my DLNA server works on my TV, but doesnt work on my macbook air.

None of my other players support all the various features I want (seek, shuffle, playlists, etc) on so many devices. Whether OS X, iPad, iPhone or iPod (sold separately), now all of my devices can see, play and control content on any other device, so it really makes no difference which device I have a song or movie on, I can get to it from any other.

Not working as expected

Sees my MediaMonkey servers but lists and items appear and disappear randomly, and mostly just refuse to play back.

Not worth the money. Crashed every first time I opened it. Wipe the library file. Reexecute, run (badly). Would not find music in my library. Close, reopen, crash, wipe, etc.

I purchased this for its DLNA client features but sadly they do not work. It’s able to see the DLNA server and browse but nothing plays. Not recommended.

I was sitting in my living room, having left my iPhone somewhere in the house, wanting to turn on my stereo and listen to some Miles Davis early in the morning. I had my MacBook with me, but no UPnP player on that machine. My system pulls files from MinimServer on a Synology NAS and feeds a PS Audio DirectStream DAC. And the apps on my iPhone and iPad are not available as Mac apps. So, I downloaded this, paid the $4.99, though with the reviews and ratings, i was reluctant. Anyway, it immediately revealed the DirectTV devices on the ATT wireless network. I switched to the higher speed internal network whivh is Ethernet-connected to the server and renderer, and noticed that PlugPlayer did not change its server or renderer listings. When I tried to get it to “refresh” its list [Reset Media Access in Preferences, very unintuitive], it told me I needed to quit and restart. So, I did, and my server and renderer were there, and PP played from and to them very well. Nice graphics, probably some wasted space in the server and renderer columns, but not a big deal. Very responsive. I get that the UPnP market is stocked with stuff that has zero regard for Mac UI conventions, but still, the developer should consider: 1. Add a refresh or rescan option, probably under the non-existent file menu; 2. Change the start screen which looks like it limits you to iTunes and Photos, when it actually doesn’t; 3. There is some unreliability in playback, with tracks occasionally not starting even though the player has progressed to the next track, or unexpectedly pausing and requiring a click on the playback button. In fairness, some of this could be related to the flakiness of UPnP in general. I have noticed that, while my DS is usuaslly rock solid, as is my MinimServer, occasionally hiccups happen; 4. Playback button should change states between play and pause icons. All in all, a decent player, worth the $4.99, especially with the family subscription. Thanks!
